Signs the Control Valve Has Failed
Control-valve replacement may be appropriate when:
- The drive motor cannot move the valve
- Water runs continuously to the drain
- Internal seals leak brine or hard water
- The flow meter no longer records use
- The circuit board or display has failed
- The valve body is cracked
- Compatible repair parts are unavailable
- Repeated internal repairs do not hold
A blank display may come from the power supply rather than the valve itself, so diagnosis comes first.
Compatibility and Flow Sizing
Compatibility includes more than tank threads. Seattle Plumbers checks valve port size, service-flow rating, backwash flow, injector size, distributor diameter, tank size, resin volume, bypass design, and brine-control requirements.
An undersized valve can reduce household flow. Incorrect backwash or injector sizing can leave the resin poorly cleaned or prevent proper brine draw.
Our Valve Replacement Process
Control valve replacement may include:
- Placing the system in bypass and depressurizing it
- Disconnecting power, drain, and brine connections
- Removing the failed control head
- Inspecting the distributor and tank-neck seal
- Installing the matched valve and clean O-ring
- Connecting the bypass, drain, and brine line
- Restoring pressure gradually
- Checking all service and drain connections for leaks
The valve is aligned without forcing the distributor tube or cross-threading the pressure vessel.
Programming and Cycle Testing
Programming sets the clock, hardness, resin capacity, reserve, salt dose, regeneration time, and cycle durations. The flow meter is checked for demand response.
We initiate regeneration and observe backwash, brine draw, rinse, refill, and valve advancement. Treated water is verified after the system has completed suitable startup operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the control valve be rebuilt instead of replaced?
Often, when the body and electronics are sound and compatible motors, pistons, seals, or meters remain available.
Will any valve fit my resin tank?
No. Tank thread, distributor, flow, backwash, injector, resin volume, and bypass connections must match.
Does a new valve improve water pressure?
A correctly sized valve may correct restriction from a damaged or undersized control, but pressure loss elsewhere requires separate diagnosis.
Should the resin be replaced at the same time?
Only when testing, age, fouling, or damage supports it. A valve failure does not automatically mean the resin has failed.
Schedule Control Valve Service
Schedule Control Valve Replacement with Seattle Plumbers for compatibility checks, careful installation, accurate programming, and full cycle verification. We restore automatic operation without mismatching the valve to the treatment system.
